Bronze is well suited to this application due to its good sliding properties in contact with steel axles, which, with proper lubrication, helps reduce friction and promotes smooth operation of the gear train. The contact surfaces between the bushings and gears feature reliefs that further reduce the friction surface area. The bushings also have no lubrication groove, which according to the manufacturer could contribute to wear on the gear axles.
